Long Day Trip

I decided to drive four hours up to Rimouski since the catherdral was open to the public. This is where Alfred Peter Roy left from to come to the United States. Along the way we stopped at Trois Pistoles and Saint Simon. On the way back we made it to Cap-St-Ignace just before sunset. It was a long day.

Trois-Pistoles

This was the most beautiful church I went to. It is open to the public. For a small fee you can get cassette player that gives you a tour of the church as you walk around. This church was built in 1887. Construction started in 1882. The name of the church is Notre-Dame-des-Neiges.

Trois-Pistoles is a little town and we were surprised to see such a big church in the town. There was a great deal of controversy about spending so much money to build a new church.

My ancestors left Trois-Pistoles for Saint Simon before the church was built. Philomene Dube was born there in 1828 and her mother Florence Berube died there in 1829. Florence's father also died there in 1827.

Saint Simon

The Dube family moved here from Trois Pistoles. They are listed here in the 1831 Canadian census. Antoine Noel Dube died here in 1843.

This church was built in 1838 and restored in 1903. You can find a little history about it here.

Rimouski

This is the place where my immigrant ancestor, Alfred Peter Roy, left from to go to Minneapolis, Minnesota. He met his future wife, Amanda Beaudoin, in Minneapolis. From the Minneapolis City Directory 1891 - 92 you can see Etienne Beaudoin, Amanda's father, and Alfred Roy living at the same address. They probalby met there.

My ancestors went to this church. It's called Saint-Germain Cathedral. It was built between 1854 and 1859. Before that the church was what is now a museum. That church was built in 1824.

Philomene Dube became a member of this church before she married Francois Regis Roy here in 1844. Their son was Alfred Peter Roy. He was born in 1865 and baptized in the cathedral. Francois and Philomene were buried at the catherdral.

Francois father, Pierre Roy, and family moved to Rimouski from Saint Henri in the early 1830s. Pierre was originally from Saint-Vallier.

You can read more information about the cathedral here. And you can see lots photos of the cathedral including the inside at Google images here.

Cap-St-Ignace

This church was built in 1880. My ancestors lived in this area in the late 1600s and early 1700s.
